Nieman Lab: Twitter and Meta charging for basic security features like verification and SMS 2FA represent a (very bad) trend driven by austerity. It’s worse than that: market pressure means more incentive to sell data and reduce overhead related to safety functions like content moderation. The macroeconomics of the tech industry are directly resulting in a more dangerous internet. This will get worse before it gets better.
